Reviewed by Harriet L. Schwartz Calling all queer lounge lizards—this one's for you. Streeter Music has compiled what may be the first collection of out-and-proud gay and lesbian-made lounge music, aptlytitled Fruit Cocktail.

Irene Farrera opens the album with a slinky "Walking in the Jungle." Tom Robinson keeps the lounge mood, but steps up the groove with "Chance," a song clearly benefiting from his rock roots. Blazing Red-

heads, an all-women band, provides "Mozambo," an instrumental delight, while Lea DeLaria's rich energized voice lifts "How High the Moon."

Also turning in an excellent vocal performance, Ian Shaw offers "It Never Entered My Mind," a cool and easy study in smooth. Steven Kowalcyk's "Mother of Mothers (Another Wave)" also stands out with its uptempo energy.

Michael Callen, Rhiannon, Holly Near, Steven Grossman, and Melinda Di Maio are among the other artists on this album. Fruit Cocktail provides more than 70 minutes of energetic and emotional music and deserves a place among the best gay and lesbian compilations.

Comedy You Can Dance To Kate Clinton

Uproar Entertainment

Continuing through her multi-media summer, Kate Clinton has released a new CD, Comedy You Can Dance To. Following on the heels of her first book Don't Get Me Started (Ballantine Books) and a summer tour, Clinton gives her fans more, more, more with her new recording.

Taped during a live show at the Improv, the CD provides more than 50 minutes of Clinton's take on gay life, political life, family life, and just about every other topic she can wander through. Segments of Clinton's show are split up into tracks and given catchy titles like "Kiss My Gender Gap" and "Mad Vow Disease."

However like any Kate Clinton show, this recording includes plenty of tangents, digressions, and sidebars. For Clinton, it seems, themes often provide simply a starting point

and from there anything goes. In "The Year of that Woman," Clinton manages to begin with Clarence Thomas and then progress through Kenneth Starr, Janet Reno's lesbian hair, the cancellation of Ellen, and well, it goes on from there.

Half-notes

This summer's lounge-fest continues with Lounging with Lee (Hip-O Records), a collection of 15 Liberace interpretations of classic pop hits including "Yesterday," "Na Na, Hey Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye," and "Overture from Tommy.'

Rhino has just released Runway Hits, a collection of songs connected with fashion shows. The 18-song album includes everything from Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible" to RuPaul's "Supermodel."

Judy Garland fans, get ready: In October, 32 Records will release Judy, a boxed set including four CDs, a videotape, and 60-page book chronicling Garland's career.
